Two Attorneys Making a Difference in a Community
This week I am recognizing the efforts of Jane-Robin Wender and Nicole Hessen of Wender, Hedler & Hessen, P.A. These attorneys have worked to develop the professionalism and collegiality in the practice of workers’ compensation in the West Palm Beach area. They have served for the last five years as co-chairs of the Palm Beach County Bar Association’s Workers’ Compensation Practice Committee. They have been responsible for organizing the workers’ compensation Bench Bar Conference for the past five years as well as the 1st Annual Workers Compensation Seminar. These opportunities bring together practitioners and the bench, to discuss the process and procedure that defines this practice. These are exceptional opportunities to grow professionally and to share experiences and perspectives.
The Workers’ Compensation Practice Committee is also responsible for distributing the Kennie Edwards award annually. This award is given “to the workers' compensation attorney who best exemplifies the professional qualities of honesty, integrity, cordiality, good humor, high ethical standards, and advocacy tempered by a sense of humility.” The efforts of the Bar Committee, under the leadership of Ms. Wender and Ms. Hessen, to recognize the professional attributes of practitioners will encourage such behavior in and out of the practice of law.
Under Ms. Wender and Ms. Hessen, the Practice Committee also hosted a mock trial for middle school students at the West Palm Beach Office of the Judges of Compensation Claims! This is an ideal method for the legal profession to give back to students. It is also a great way for attorneys and judges to work together for a worthwhile goal. Such real-world experiences, where young people have the opportunity to perform tasks, and engage in hands-on exercises, are the kind of education that will stick with students, and are a welcome relief to the daily routine of book learning.
Ms. Wender and Ms. Hessen practice together at Wender, Hedler & Hessen, P.A. in West Palm Beach, Florida. Both focus on representing injured workers. They exemplify service to the legal community through the efforts of the Workers’ Compensation Practice Committee. Jane-Robin also demonstrates her dedication to workers’ compensation through her Board Certification (since 1999), her efforts delivering lectures on our practice, her service on The Florida Bar Board Certification Committee, and her membership in the Florida Bar Workers’ Compensation Section.
Ms. Hessen serves on the Board of Directors of the Palm Beach County Hispanic Bar Association, as President-Elect of the Palm Beach Chapter of Florida Association of Women Lawyers, as a member of The Florida Bar Workers’ Compensation Section, and Florida Workers’ Advocates. These likewise are significant contributions to professionalism and collegiality among attorneys.
Ms. Wender and Ms. Hessen are involved and engaged in their community and their local bar association. The practice of law is trying at its best. I hear many expressions of concern about the practice of law and the legal community. It is refreshing to come in contact with such examples of community involvement and dedication to the legal profession.
